Essentia Health - Duluth, MN
Essentia Health, headquartered in Duluth, Minnesota, is continually growing and now serves patients in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Idaho.
HEI recently designed the electrical infrastructure upgrade project at the St. Mary’s Medical Center. The focus of the project is to provide the 750,000 square foot active hospital with a new Essential Electrical System that provides the required separation of branches to meet the current National Electrical Code and NFPA 99.
As part of this project, a new generator plant to support the existing St. Mary’s Medical Center (SMMC) and future Hospital expansions will be constructed. The new generator plant and associated paralleling switchgear has been designed to accommodate a total of five (5) 2000 KW standby generators. Currently, three (3) generators will be installed and configured in an N+1 configuration with two (2) of the three (3) generators able to accommodate the overall electrical demand of SMMC. Generators #4 and #5 will be installed in conjunction with the future expansions.
Since SMMC is an existing active hospital, the new electrical infrastructure system will be installed while the existing system is on-line. Two (2) new Essential Electrical System rooms are being constructed to house multiple medium voltage transfer switches, transformers, and switchboards that will establish the new separated electrical infrastructure. In addition, a combination of existing and new branch panelboards will be utilized to allow the branch circuiting to be properly connected to the associated life safety, critical, equipment and optional branches throughout the facility.
