Our History

  • 1979 – Hallberg and Associates was founded by Warren C. Hallberg in Forest Lake, Minnesota as a mechanical engineering firm specializing in K-12 schools. 
  • 1984 – Warren’s son, Joseph Hallberg, purchased the firm, changing the name to Hallberg Engineering, Inc. 
  • 1996 – HEI expanded services to include electrical engineering.
  • 1998 – HEI relocated to White Bear Lake and once again expanded its services by offering commissioning and recommissioning services.
  • 2001 – HEI added technology design to its line of services.
  • 2002 – HEI entered into new markets and created a retail design group.
  • 2003 – HEI created the Schools for Energy Efficiency™ (SEE) program to promote energy efficiency and cost savings in K-12 schools.
  • 2007 – HEI now holds professional engineering licenses in 49 states. 
  • 2008 – HEI designed its first LEED certified project by providing mechanical, electrical, and commissioning services for a 30,000 square foot REI retail store in downtown Chicago, IL.  
  • 2009 – HEI created an energy services group to offer services such as energy modeling, energy studies and energy tax deduction analysis. 
  • 2013 – Richard Lucio and Paul Fettinger purchased the firm from Joe Hallberg. They plan to carry on the company’s strong reputation of providing quality engineering design and superior service. HEI is certified as a Small and Minority Business Enterprise (S/MBE) with the State of Minnesota, University of Minnesota, City of Minneapolis, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metropolitan Airport Commission, Metropolitan Council, Hennepin County, Ramsey County, and City of St. Paul.
  • 2015 - HEI opened an office in Duluth, to better serve our Duluth based clients.
